About the Marranunggu Language

Marranunggu is a language traditionally spoken across the northern area of the Daly Language Family region in the Northern Territory of Australia. The language is also variously referred to in the linguistic documentation as ‘Maranungku’, ‘Merranunggu’ and ‘Marra Warrgat’. The particular variety (or ‘dialect’) of the language focused on here is known as Marranunggu.

Marranunggu is a highly threatened language, with only 20 partial or full speakers left, now spread out across the top end, in Darwin, Batchelor, Palmerston, Delissaville, Wagait, Larrakia Aboriginal Land Trust and Gurudju Aboriginal Land Trust, Daly River Aboriginal Land Trust and Belyuen.
